UNEP is a very important partner to FEE in the promotion of sustainable development through environmental education.
UNEP and FEE initiated cooperation in 1996, informing the public about eco-tourism with the Blue Flag's example and extending the principles of the Programme to non-European regions. With the support of UNEP, FEE was able to start the implementation of the Blue Flag Programme in the Caribbean and South East Asia. UNEP is participating in the International Blue Flag Jury.
In 2003, UNEP and FEE signed an official “Memorandum of Understanding” (MoU) stating that UNEP and FEE will collaborate on all relevant areas of common interest related to environmental education on prioritized issues and programmes.
Eco-Schools is recognised in the MoU as among UNEP’s preferred global model programmes for environmental education, management, sustainability, and certification at the international level.
FEE is an affiliate member of UNWTO. In 2007, the membership was enlarged with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between FEE and UNWTO. The MoU recognises the value of the tourism related programmes of FEE.
FEE has furthermore participated in the working group in charge of the establishment of the UNWTO Global Code of Ethics and fully supports its principles.
WTO supports Green Key campaign actively. WTO has formulated a list of requirements that eco-labels on tourism should fulfil. Green Key is in compliance with these requirements.
